Melanie Authier’s paintings are colourful journeys into an imaginary world. Rather than describe a specific representational place, her images invoke feelings, memories and sensations of a metaphorical terrain. The paintings express the idea of a landscape or "nature" that is mediated. They probe both the way that landscape is presented to us and the way that we experience it in the 21st Century.

Melanie Authier was born in 1980 in Montreal. She received a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal in 2002 and completed her MFA at the University of Guelph in 2006.

Among numerous scholarships and awards, she recently received the Honourable Mention prize for the 9th Annual RBC Canadian Painting Competition 2007. Works by the competition’s 15 semi-finalists were exhibited at various public galleries across Canada. Winning the RBC prize has allowed Authier to devote herself full-time to painting. She has spent the last year traveling to the UK and Switzerland and was recently given the opportunity to paint for a couple of months in Vancouver.
