Melanie Authier was born in 1980 in Montreal. She received a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal, and completed her MFA at the University of Guelph in 2006. She recently exhibited at Ace Art Inc. in Winnipeg and has an upcoming review in Border Crossings magazine.

Authier's abstract paintings are intense colourful journeys of an imaginary world. The paintings express the idea of a landscape but are never representations of a particular place. Rather, the paintings invoke feelings, memories and sensations of a metaphorical landscape of the mind.

The paintings are layered with intense combinations of colours. Authier mixes deep blues with acid yellows, neon pinks and rich purples to create a wonderful depth of space. As well her variety of broad brush strokes next to intricate web-like strokes give each painting an innate energy and flow.

Melanie Authier won Honourable Mention in the ninth annual RBC Painting Competition. The jury selected from 690 artists across the country. The goal of the competition is to support and nurture Canadian visual artists early in their career by providing them with the forum to display their artistic talent to the country. The winning paintings are now part of RBC's Canadian Art Collection.
