Jonathan Forrest: Power Play

Power Play      March 6-28, 2009

The prairie provinces in Canada are extremely well known for their abstract painters. Evolving from this strong tradition, Jonathan Forrest works his canvas by appling slabs of vibrant colour to the canvas in varying degrees of thickness and texture.

Forrest’s new paintings shift conventional abstract painting. Using both bright and subtle colours, he folds simple circles into precisely cut diamonds, re-moulds rectangles and tilts perfect squares.

Jonathan Forrest was born in 1962 in Edinburgh, Scotland and immigrated with his family to Canada in 1977. Forrest studied at the University of Saskatchewan receiving his BFA in 1983 and his MFA in 1991. His work has been shown in public galleries such as the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, The Edmonton Art Gallery and The Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina.
