May 6 - 28, 2011
In May 2002, Katherine Knight travelled along the Saint Lawrence river from Sorel to Havre Pierre as a guest of the Captain on the Freighter "Ferbec". The resulting photographs trace the passing shore as viewed from the ship. The photographs are both a document of what Knight saw and a material representation of the space sandwiched between the two shores and vistas. For Knight, navigation is not about staying in one place but rather reflects a desire or necessity to go from one place to another. In this regard, navigation presents an appropriate metaphor for living.
It was from these photographs that Winnipeg painter (and lifelong friend) Wanda Koop decided to take a similar journey with Knight on a Freighter down the Saint Lawrence River in 2010. The journey was documented in Knight's recent film on Wanda Koop titled KOOP.
Toronto based artist and filmmaker Katherine Knight is nationally recognized by her distinctive landscape based photographic works. Working both factually and through small interventions, Knight infuses the ordinary with emotive and metaphoric content. In 2000 Knight received the Duke and Duchess of York Prize in recognition of excellence in her work. She has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows across Canada and her works are held in many public and corporate collections including the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Banff Centre for the Arts and The Canada Council Art Bank.
