Stephen Hutchings: Landscapes for the End of Time
Winnipeg Art Gallery
May 10 - August 5, 2012
This hauntingly beautiful exhibition of eight monumental paintings takes its names from Olivier Messiaen’s (1908-1992) Quartet for the End of Time. Messiaen created his score while interned at a German prison camp in 1940; he and other prisoners first performed it for their fellow captives on January 15, 1941.
Hutching’s paintings are not directly inspired by the score but they relate insofar as the correspondence between the life span of an individual and the idea of eternity. New Arrival -- A classic painting from Robert Cadotte's popular "Thirty Three Tree Tops" series
"This show continues Cadotte’s unsentimental exploration of images from nature. Without representing any specific object, there are unmistakable pieces of branches, and trees. There are images of sky, where changes in season, and in light, time, and weather are suggested. There are hints of region, of history, even art history; and yet, as always in Cadotte’s work he has introduced a constructed tension between components in each painting." John Nicholson quoted from Robert Cadotte "Recent Works" brochure, 2000

New Arrival: The complete suite of 4 original "Venetian Views" hand-painted prints by British artist Howard Hodgkin.
Howard Hodgkin's four "Venetian Views" show the same view of Venice at different times of the day. Each is so distinctly different from the others that it is difficult, at first sight, to believe that all four were printed from the same set of five printing plates. The printed colours, and the hand-colouring applied directly to the paper, vary from one view to another.
"Venetian Views" demonstrate many qualities that have long been symptomatic of Hodgkin's approach to printmaking: the boldness and immediacy of the marks, the eloquence of the brushstrokes, the adaptation of the plate, the transformation through hand-colouring, the risk-taking. What sets....
