Aganetha Dyck is best known for her 20 year long collaboration with live honeybees. She is interested in inter-species communication and the power of the small. In 2008, Dyck worked on a series called the “Masked Ball Series” where she placed porcelain figurines directly in the hive for the bees to work on. Using bee pheremones and perfumes, Dyck painted on the figurines in the places where she wanted the bees to make their marks. Through months of collaboration, sculpting and hive visits, Dyck has created surreal sculptures with the bees – otherworldly masks for the figurines to now attend their masquerade ball.
