In the 1960s Greg Curnoe (1937-1992) became recognized as one of Canada’s first Pop artists. At the time he had an affinity to Dada and Nihilism and worked with collage, found objects and cut-out shapes. The painting “Sketch for “Room” Painting” from 1965 incorporates many things that have become instantly recognizable as a classic Curnoe: flat, brilliant, vivid colour with the witty inclusion of collage (magnet sticker) and a found object (woman’s watch). We will also be bringing a selection of Day-Glo works on paper made in 1962 by Greg Curnoe. These works on paper visually express his youthful energy, wild experimentation and devotion to painting the everyday, interesting things from his daily life.
