David Merritt “blinker”

David Merritt “blinker” March 28 – April 25, 2026

Our middle gallery exhibition features a tightly curated eight year survey of artworks by David Merritt.  Exploring the natural and human traces that exist at the margins of our attention, Merritt has an intricate approach to materiality.  He focuses on both additive and reductive methods of rendering, where he reanimates artefacts of the everyday.  Each surface, whether a post-war map, found furniture or lead, is host to exquisite images, often circular in form, expanding the material and performative possibilities of drawing.

David Merritt (b. Hamilton in 1955) earned his BFA at Western University and an MFA from NSCAD.  His multimedia practice explores the relationship between human and non-human systems.  Process-driven and conceptually oriented, his work develops out of the material possibilities of drawing’s expanded field.

Merritt’s artwork is in many collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Gallery of Hamilton and Museum London.  A touring survey exhibition of mid-career work, “shim/sham/shimmy”, was circulated in 2010 by Museum London in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Hamilton.  Merritt lives in London, ON where he is Professor Emeritus at Western University.

David Merritt is represented by Christie Contemporary, Toronto, ON.
