Emelie Robertson “Phase Dance” September 19 – October 31

Emelie Robertson’s new works on paper reference the landscape, both as a literal place as well as a perception of a place through memory.  Within these works, the painted surface becomes a threshold for movement and observation, where perception entangles with intuition, recollection, and material. Like walking through a forest and like memory itself, the paintings are in a constant negotiation between proximity and distance, perception and expression, stillness and movement.  Our looking therefore highlights how we move, see and feel in the landscapes in which we inhabit.  It is a moving experience.

Emelie Robertson, born in 1997, received her BFA from the University of Guelph in 2019 and her MFA at Western University in 2026.  A chance high school trip to Temagami introduced her to the painting medium, which has become her life’s passion ever since.  She is interested in the perception of nature and the expression of place – painting that simulates the emotional and optic experience of being within the forest.

The Place Between a Feeling in July 2025 was Robertson’s first solo exhibition with the Michael Gibson Gallery. In 2023, Robertson was included in the group show How Was Your Fire at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in Owen Sound and the recipient of a 2024 Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant.  Originally from Geraldton in Northwestern Ontario, Robertson is of French and Scottish ancestry.
