This exhibition presents the portraiture of Florence Caryle (1864 – 1923) alongside work by contemporary painter, poet and performance artist Angie Quick.
Carlyle was a writer as well as a painter, and her writing reveals a deeply emotional experience of life that still yearned for true expression in the later years of her career. “The immortal picture is still unpainted, and my book still unpublished,” she wrote in 1918. What might these unexpressed passions and unheeded tears entail? What did Carlyle want to paint?
In pairing Carlyle’s work with Quick’s, interesting connections and distinctions are revealed. Visual harmonies of colour and related figurative or domestic imagery are in tension with differences in technique and conceptual freedom. These similarities and contrasts invite new ways of understanding each artist’s work through the lens of the other.
In Your unheeded tears (filled me up), shared themes of love and lust, passion and the mundane, womanhood and defiance, ripple back and forth through time. Connections between the works create a network of influences that appear to flow in multiple directions, disrupting a linear sense of time. Prompted by a curiosity about Carlyle’s deep desire for expression, the space between Quick and Carlyle’s paintings becomes a site of imagined possibilities.
