At the beginning of August, we were invited by Susan Day to visit the construction site of London’s new Children’s Museum where she is near the completion of her monumental 600 square foot mosaic. Commissioned for their new 36,000 square foot museum opening early 2025 at 100 Kellogg’s Lane, Day has been working on this project since March 2019.
The massive mosaic wall, located at the entrance of the museum, welcomes every visitor and will be a major highlight for the children who helped Day create the individual clay tiles. From faces to fish, flowers, boats, animals, suns, stars, planes and cars, Day along with the children have created an incredible tribute to creativity and play.
“Along with dozens of volunteers, studio assistants, and friends, I have held tile making workshops then have taken the hundreds (thousands likely) of tiles back to my studio to dry, bisque fire, glaze and glaze fire. We also made the thousands more tiles to contextualize the children’s tiles and cut over 50,000 mirror pieces to add ribbons of reflection to record passing movements and bring the whole artwork to life. This mosaic belongs to the children.” Susan Day
