In our middle gallery we are pleased to present new works by London, ON artist Doug Mitchell. Mitchell is a multimedia artist who works with many different mediums such as painting, sculpture, sound, and photography. His new sculptures investigate the spectrum and reflection of colour, both in its presence as well as its absence. By painting one panel side white and the other side with colour, Mitchell explores the possibilities of colour and how they can be modified with light.
Also included is a recent multi-panelled “map” of the forks of the Thames river in London. Both visual and historical, the map layers images ranging from river surveys and celestial maps to text from Buckminster Fuller and Michael Ondaatje. Mitchell believes in the connectedness of people and merges time, people and place in “#1 Dundas St.”

London, ON artist Doug Mitchell was born in 1950 and graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1973. Working in painting, sculpture, sound, photography and illustrations, he was a sculpture studio instructor at Western University.
In 1992 Mitchell enjoyed a solo exhibition, “Land and Water”, which toured to the Grimsby Public Art Gallery, Woodstock Public Art Gallery, Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant and the Thames Art Gallery. Other public gallery solo exhibitions were hosted by the Art Gallery of Algoma, Museum London, and McIntosh Gallery.
Mitchell’s work is in the public collections of the Canada Council Art Bank, Museum London, McIntosh Gallery and private collections.
