Celebrating Family

Brian Jones

In celebration of Family Day Weekend in Ontario, we are highlighting the early family portraits by Brian Jones.

In 1969, Brian Jones moved to London to attend the special art course at H.B. Beal Secondary School.  After school and a brief apprenticeship with Jack Chambers, Jones dedicated himself to a straight-forward realism.

Working directly from family photo albums, Jones (like Chambers) embraced a subject matter that reflected everyday life and the youthful memories from his past.  Jones’  paintings and drawings from the early-mid 1970s were candid snapshots of family, his grandparents, father Lionel and mother Mabel.

Not only do the works feature Jones’s incredible attention to detail, but specifically with “Father and Son” we begin to see the influence of Stanley Spencer and the voluminous, elongated figures that Jones became known for.
